There are many reasons why children exchange explicit messages. There are other reasons why children sext. Many of these motives conform to those that inspire other teenage behaviours. Children in romantic relationships sext as a way to further their relationships and as means of showing their trust in one another2. They also use sexting as a form of flirting and as an incentive to start a relationship. Children sext to communicate with each other.

The media and some academic studies often draw attention to issues of risk , danger , and the often- gendered negative outcomes of sexting. Another frequently mentioned concern is the potential legal implications of possessing or circulating such images electronically. Such negative consequences are serious and need our attention. Our own sociological research , drawing on ten focus groups of undergraduate male students in Melbourne, provides some important insights into this.
